Caring for a pregnant pet
Food: switch gradually to a kitten or puppy food in the second half of pregnancy — it has more calories and calcium. Increase the amount steadily; nursing mothers may need two to four times their normal calories.
Deworming and flea control: only with products your vet confirms are safe in pregnancy.
Vaccines: avoid live vaccines during pregnancy — plan vaccinations before breeding.
Nesting: in the last week, prepare a warm, quiet, draught-free box lined with washable cloths.
When to call the vet
Strong straining for 30–60 minutes without a baby
More than 2–4 hours between babies with more expected
Green, black or bloody discharge before the first baby
Mother is weak, trembling, or in severe pain, or has a fever after delivery
Pregnancy goes beyond day 70 (cats) or 68 (dogs)
Our surgeons perform emergency caesarean sections when labour can’t progress safely.
Thinking about the future
Every litter adds to the number of cats and dogs needing homes in Rangpur. After this litter, talk to us about spaying — it also protects the mother from pyometra and mammary cancer.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a cat pregnant?
About 63–67 days, with an average of 65 days from mating. Healthy deliveries can happen between roughly day 61 and 70.
How long is a dog pregnant?
About 63 days from ovulation. Because mating can happen days before or after ovulation, the due date from mating is 58–68 days.
How can I tell if my cat is pregnant?
Around 2–3 weeks after mating the nipples become pink and enlarged ("pinking up"). A vet can confirm with ultrasound from about 3 weeks, and the belly is visibly larger from about 5 weeks.
When should I worry during labour?
Call a vet if your pet strains strongly for more than 30–60 minutes without a baby, if more than 2–4 hours pass between babies, if there is green or bloody discharge before the first birth, or if she seems weak or in severe pain.
