Vaccination Dogs
Dog and puppy vaccination schedule in Bangladesh
The vaccines every dog in Bangladesh needs — DHPPi+L and rabies — with puppy timings, adult boosters, and what to do if you missed a dose.
Key takeaways
- DHPPi+L protects against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.
- Puppy doses at about 8, 12 and 16 weeks; rabies from 12 weeks.
- Yearly boosters — leptospirosis protection doesn't last longer than a year.
- Keep puppies off public ground until two weeks after the final dose.

Puppies in Bangladesh face two big threats that vaccines prevent almost completely: parvovirus, which kills many unvaccinated puppies every year, and rabies, which is fatal to dogs and people alike. Here’s the schedule we use at Community Pet Care in Rangpur.
The core vaccines
| Vaccine | Protects against |
|---|---|
| D — Distemper | Fever, eye/nose discharge, cough, then twitching and seizures |
| H — Hepatitis (adenovirus) | Liver disease |
| P — Parvovirus | Severe bloody diarrhoea and vomiting |
| Pi — Parainfluenza | Kennel cough |
| L — Leptospirosis | Kidney and liver failure; spread by rat urine and floodwater |
| Rabies | Rabies — fatal, and transmissible to people |
Leptospirosis is technically “non-core” in some countries, but with monsoon flooding and rats in every town, we consider it essential in North Bengal.
Puppy schedule
| Age | Vaccine |
|---|---|
| 7 weeks | Deworm |
| 8 weeks (from 6 if advised) | DHPPi — dose 1 |
| 12 weeks | DHPPi+L — dose 2 + rabies |
| 16 weeks | DHPPi+L — dose 3 |
| 1 year after the last puppy dose | DHPPi+L + rabies booster |
| Every year after | DHPPi+L + rabies booster |

Why the 16-week dose matters
Just like kittens, puppies carry antibodies from their mother that block vaccines for a variable time — in some puppies until 16 weeks. The final puppy dose at 16 weeks or later is the one that reliably takes. Stopping at 12 weeks leaves some puppies unprotected against parvo at exactly the age they start exploring.
Adult dogs with no history
- Day 0: DHPPi+L + rabies
- 3–4 weeks later: DHPPi+L
- Then: yearly boosters
Leptospirosis always needs two doses to start protecting.
Before and after
- Healthy only. We examine your dog first — vomiting, diarrhoea or fever means treatment comes before vaccines.
- Deworm first. See the deworming schedule.
- Side effects are usually mild: a sore spot, a quiet day. Face swelling, vomiting or collapse are rare — call us immediately.
Keeping puppies safe until they’re protected
Parvovirus lives in soil for months. Until two weeks after the final vaccine:
- carry your puppy when outside, rather than letting it walk on public ground
- avoid places where unknown dogs gather
- do socialise — with vaccinated, healthy dogs, and with people, sounds and car rides
Early socialisation matters; you just need to do it safely.
Rabies: why it’s non-negotiable
Most human rabies deaths in Bangladesh follow dog bites. Vaccinating your dog every year protects your family, your neighbours, and your dog. If your dog is bitten by an unknown animal, wash the wound and see us within 24 hours — our rabies bite guide explains what to do.
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If your pet is unwell, call us or visit a registered veterinarian.
Frequently asked questions
When should a puppy get its first vaccine?
At 6–8 weeks old, followed by boosters every 3–4 weeks until the puppy is at least 16 weeks old.
What does DHPPi+L stand for?
Distemper, Hepatitis (adenovirus), Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis — the core diseases plus two important extras for Bangladesh.
Do street dogs need rabies vaccines?
Vaccinating community dogs is the most effective way to stop rabies in people. Bangladesh's national programme runs mass dog vaccination campaigns; ask us if you care for community dogs.
My puppy had one vaccine at the breeder. Is that enough?
No. One dose, especially before 12 weeks, is rarely enough. Bring the card and we'll complete the course.
