Key takeaways

  • Ticks can make dogs seriously ill with blood parasites — prevention matters.
  • Never use dog flea products on cats — permethrin can kill them.
  • Treat every pet in the home and the environment together.
  • Kerosene, phenyl and lice shampoo are dangerous home remedies.

Bangladesh’s heat and humidity are ideal for ticks and fleas. They’re not just itchy nuisances — they carry diseases that can be life-threatening, especially for dogs.

Ticks: the bigger danger for dogs

Ticks spread blood parasites that we diagnose regularly in Rangpur:

  • Babesiosis — destroys red blood cells: weakness, pale or yellow gums, dark urine, fever
  • Ehrlichiosis — fever, weight loss, nosebleeds, bruising, low platelets

Check your dog daily in the warm months, especially ears, neck, armpits and between the toes. Any dog with fever, weakness, pale gums or bleeding after tick exposure needs a vet — we can test and treat. See diagnostics.

Removing a tick

  1. Use fine tweezers or a tick hook.
  2. Grip the tick close to the skin.
  3. Pull straight out, slowly, without twisting or squeezing the body.
  4. Clean the bite and wash your hands.

Don’t burn ticks, or smother them with oil, kerosene or petroleum jelly.

Fleas

  • Cause itching, hair loss and flea allergy dermatitis
  • Can cause anaemia in kittens and puppies
  • Spread tapeworm when swallowed during grooming

Look for “flea dirt” — black specks in the coat that turn red on a wet tissue.

Safe treatment

  • Use a product labelled for the species and dosed for your pet’s weight.
  • Never use dog products on cats. Many contain permethrin, which causes tremors, seizures and death in cats. Keep freshly treated dogs away from cats until the product dries.
  • Young kittens and puppies need age-appropriate products — ask us.

Treat the home, too

Most fleas are in the environment, not on the pet. While treating all pets:

  • Wash bedding in hot water weekly
  • Vacuum floors, sofas and corners, then empty the vacuum outside
  • Treat every pet in the home at the same time

Home remedies to avoid

Kerosene, mobil, phenyl, human lice shampoo and insecticide sprays are still used on pets in Bangladesh. They burn the skin, poison pets when licked and often don’t work. Check our toxic household items list.

Year-round prevention

For dogs that go outside, year-round tick and flea prevention is the safest approach in Bangladesh, especially through the monsoon. We’ll recommend a product that fits your pet and budget — see parasite control.

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If your pet is unwell, call us or visit a registered veterinarian.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a tick safely?

Use fine tweezers or a tick hook, grip close to the skin and pull straight out slowly without twisting or squeezing the body. Don't burn it or apply oil or kerosene. Clean the area and wash your hands.

What is tick fever in dogs?

It's a common name for blood-parasite infections spread by ticks, like babesiosis and ehrlichiosis. Signs include fever, weakness, pale gums, dark urine, nosebleeds or bruising. It needs prompt treatment.

How often should I use flea and tick prevention?

It depends on the product — many are monthly, some last up to three months. In Bangladesh, year-round prevention is best for dogs that go outside.

Can fleas live in my house?

Yes. Most of the flea population — eggs, larvae and pupae — lives in bedding, carpets and cracks, not on the pet. Vacuum and wash bedding hot while treating your pets.
