Key takeaways

  • Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks → monthly until 6 months → every 3 months.
  • Dose by current weight — young pets grow fast.
  • Fleas carry tapeworm, so treat fleas at the same time.
  • Some worms can infect children; hygiene matters.

Worms are among the most common problems in pets in Bangladesh — especially in kittens and puppies, who are often born with them or pick them up from their mother’s milk. Regular deworming is cheap, simple, and makes a big difference.

The schedule

Age Kittens Puppies
Start 3 weeks 2 weeks
Until 12 weeks Every 2 weeks Every 2 weeks
3 to 6 months Monthly Monthly
Adults — lower risk Every 3 months Every 3 months
Adults — higher risk Monthly Monthly

Higher risk means your pet hunts, roams outside unsupervised, eats raw meat or fish, has had fleas, or lives with young children or elderly people. Get exact dates with our deworming schedule tool.

The worms we see most in Rangpur

  • Roundworms — pot bellies, poor growth, diarrhoea; can infect children
  • Hookworms — blood loss and anaemia, especially in puppies; larvae can penetrate skin
  • Tapeworms — rice-like segments around the tail; spread by fleas and by eating prey
  • Whipworms (dogs) — chronic diarrhoea

Doing it right

  • Weigh first. A kitten can double its weight in a month. A dose based on last month’s weight may be too low.
  • Use a product for the right species and age.
  • Treat fleas too. Otherwise tapeworm comes straight back — see ticks and fleas.
  • Deworm before vaccinating — a heavy worm burden weakens the vaccine response.
  • Pregnant or nursing? Only use products your vet confirms are safe.

Protecting your family

Some pet worms can infect people, particularly children who play on the ground. Scoop litter daily, wash hands after handling pets and soil, and keep deworming regular.

Frequently asked questions

What are the signs of worms in cats and dogs?

A pot belly, diarrhoea, weight loss, a dull coat, scooting, worms in vomit or stool, or rice-like segments around the tail. Many pets show no signs at all.

Which dewormer should I use?

It depends on the species, age, weight and which worms are likely. Broad-spectrum products containing praziquantel plus another ingredient cover roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. Ask us for a product and dose.

Can I give my dog's dewormer to my cat?

Only if the product is labelled for cats and dosed for your cat's weight. Some dog products are too strong or unsafe for cats.

Should I deworm before vaccination?

Yes — ideally a few days to two weeks before the first vaccine.
